Celebrating the Journeys of Learners and Tutors Across Oklahoma
In keeping with this year’s “Coming Into Port” theme, we honored those who have stayed the course, overcome obstacles, and helped others find their way.
Adult Learner Awards
Four outstanding adult learners were selected based on competitive nominations. These individuals have shown exceptional perseverance, progress, and purpose. You can read about each award winner below.
Tutor Recognition
Every tutor makes a difference. All nominated tutors will receive a personalized certificate of appreciation. Tutor recognition is non-competitive.
Abigail Rodriguez came to Bartlesville Public Library Literacy Services with two goals: to learn English and get her U.S. driver’s license. In one year, her CASAS score rose 10 points, she built confidence in daily conversations, and she proudly earned her license. She has since shared her study flashcards with other learners, attended literacy events with her family, and spoken at City Council to defend program funding. Abigail is not only thriving in her own journey, but also giving back and inspiring her community.
Rasheen Scott joined OIC of OK County in 2024 with determination to finish the education interrupted in his youth. Despite frequent moves and challenges, he has passed three HiSET exams, advanced through Levels 1 and 2 of Computer Software Training, and grown into a more confident, engaged learner. A devoted father of three, Rasheen is working toward becoming a lineman while showing his children the power of perseverance. Once quiet and unsure, he now inspires classmates with his dedication and purpose.
Suleman Dar came to the U.S. from Pakistan with a dream of citizenship. After attending Duncan Area Literacy Council’s classes, he passed his interview, was sworn in as a citizen, and registered to vote in 2025. Suleman now promotes literacy and citizenship programs, often helping others prepare for English and civics exams. Known for his kindness and confidence, he continues to serve his community while working at Walmart, where his helpfulness shines. His story shows the power of resilience, faith, and opportunity.
Connie Smock joined OIC of OK County in March 2025 determined to earn her high school equivalency. In just over a month, she graduated and immediately began OIC’s Computer Software Training program, where she continues to excel. Once unsure of her own abilities, Connie has grown into a confident student who now encourages and supports her peers. Her greatest triumph came with the reading exam she feared most, which became her highest score. Connie’s journey proves it’s never too late to set new goals and succeed.
