The 2026 Oklahoma Literacy Coalition Symposiums, taking place in Duncan (February 13) and Tulsa (March 6), are one-day professional development events designed for adult education teachers and tutors. Sessions focus on practical strategies you can use right away—covering learner engagement, ESL instruction, and everyday classroom challenges. You’ll also have time to connect with peers from across the state, share ideas, and leave with fresh energy and tools that support your work with adult learners.

10:45 AM Navigating Through Trauma to Empower Success by Kathy Young
Our students have trauma in their past and often in their present. When we learn to recognize how trauma is adversely affecting our students, we can teach them more effectively. This workshop provides foundational neuroscience concepts and connects them to trauma and our students' ability to learn (and our ability to teach). The material is accessible and practical. We will examine resources, skills, and knowledge that will improve your classroom environment. You will also develop a greater understanding of yourself and how your nervous system affects your teaching (and your life). If you feel like you have too much to do and cannot add something else, then this workshop is for you! Trauma-informed instruction is not "one more thing" you have to squeeze into your day - it is an approach to what you are already doing. This workshop will provide research-based best practices for trauma-informed instruction to support you in working smarter, not harder.
